5 of the Easiest Ways to Conserve Water
- Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when full....it may sound obvious, but even the small daily decisions can add up to big water savings. You can save 10 to 20 gallons of water a day this way.
- Don't let the faucet run while you're brushing your teeth or shaving.....when you start to pay attention, you'll notice there are many times when the water is running unnecessarily. This can add up to considerable water waste.
- Let your grass get a little overgrown.....this may be the easiest one yet, all you have to do is not mow your lawn as often, the grass gets a little taller thus providing more shade which prevents the soil from drying out.
- Use native plants in landscape...you don't have to turn your lawn into a rock garden to conseve water, there are many beautiful native plants and using them can cut your water usage on plants by more than 50 percent.
- Turn-off the hose between rinses when you're washing your car, water restrictions require that a hose equip with a shut-off nozzle be used and this can save you up to 150 gallons of water per wash.
Ways to Save both Water and Money at Home
- For an investment of $ 20 to $ 40 dollars, homeowners can install low-flow shower heads, place bottles in the toilet tank, install low-flow aerators on faucets and repair dripping faucets and leaking toilets. This could save the average household 10,000 to 25,000 gallons each year for a family of four and it would pay for itself in less than a year.
- Test toilet(s) for leaks.....by adding a few drops of food coloring (red) to the water in the toilet tank and allowing it to sit for at least three minutes. Watch to see it the coloring appears in the bowel and if it does, the toilet has a silent leak that needs to be repaired.
- Scrape the dishes clean instead of rinsing them before placing them in the dishwasher.
- Fill a pan of water or put a stopper in the sink for washing and rinsing pots, pans & dishes rather than turning on the water faucet each time a rinse is needed.
